On October 13th, Professor Yang Changju, former director-general of Education, Science, Culture and Health Expert Division of State Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs and specially-appointed professor of School of International Education has been invited to conduct a seminar for the high-level international experimental class, with the theme of “New Understanding on the Importance of Training High-level International Talents”. The activity was hosted by Li Minjie, vice dean of School of Foreign Languages with the attendance of Sun Xiaoli, director of Office for International Cooperation and Exchange.

Professor Yang firstly illustrated his insight and new understanding toward high-level international talents. Currently, we are closer than ever before to realizing the ambitious goal of national rejuvenation, and we are increasingly craving for talents. The strategy on developing a quality workforce in the new era aims to lay a solid talent base for basically realizing socialist modernization by 2035 and turning China into a great modern socialist country in all respects by 2050. Professor Yang said that experimental classes served as bases for training high-level international talents and a pilot ground of our university to foster international top talents.

Speaking of experimental classes, Professor Yang quoted remarks of President Xi Jinping in the National Conference on Ideological and Political Work in Colleges and Universities. President Xi Jinping said: “our need for higher education is more urgent than ever, and the thirst for scientific knowledge and excellence is stronger than ever.” The goal of experimental classes is training innovative, applicative and versatile international talents who have firm ideals and beliefs, excellent foreign language competences, familiarity with international rules and cross-cultural communication and international communication skills through two years of course study and practical study.

In terms of the method of talent training, Professor Yang pointed out that self-drive and self-transcendence were the roots of the growth and success of talents, which was a non-linear and dynamic process. He emphasized that continuous learning and lifelong growth were very important in this era. There has never been an era that requires us to learn continuously, deeply, extensively, quickly, efficiently, anytime and anywhere. It also requires all students to have an open, systematic and innovative thinking.

At the end of the seminar, Professor Yang actively interacted with the students and gave detailed answers to their on-site questions. This seminar enabled everyone to have a deeper understanding of the experimental class, clarified the individual learning goals, benefited a lot from it, and injected new vitality into the long-term development of the experimental class.
