The SFL offers master’s degrees in Foreign Language and Literature (Level One Discipline) and Masters of Translation and Interpreting (MTI). MA in Foreign Language and Literature includes English Language and Literature, and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The SFL planned the MA program in Foreign Language and Literature in 1994, and was approved by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council in 2001.In 2002, graduates were enrolled with research areas in Linguistic, Applied Linguistics and English Teaching. Foreign Language and Literature was ratified as the Level-One Discipline for master’s degree by Academic Degree Commission of the State Council in 2010, including three research areas, namely, English Language, British and American Literature, Business English. Linguistics probes into the ontology of linguistics and its research methods; Applied Linguistics researches into the theory and practice of the application of English as well as English teaching; English teaching explores the English course design, language test and classroom teaching methods; British and American Literature probes into the British and American literary classics with a close connection to the history of culture development; Business English carries out studies in business theory and practice in the context of cross-culture communication; MTI focuses on the cultivation of high-level talents in translation and interpreting with practical skills.

 

Among the teaching staff for MA program, 7 are professors and 30 associate professors, among whom two have got PhD degrees. After years of development, now it boasts a well-structured teaching group who are intelligent and diligent in teaching and research. All the graduate tutors and teachers lecturing graduate courses have got the experience of studying abroad, and they are expert in the language and cultures of UK and USA. They have obtained great research achievements in linguistic, applied linguistic and English teaching, among which are more than 20 provincial or national research projects, 8 textbooks, and 230 theses, etc.

 

MA Program in SFL, with its focus on the cultivation of students’ research ability, has successfully produced outstanding graduates who are popular among their employers varying from schools to research institutes and gain the recognition of society for their solid foundation in language, teaching and research ability. They serve the society as teachers, translators or interpreters, and language researcher, etc.
