On the afternoon of May 19, Professor Liao Huaying, dean of the School of Foreign Languages of Donghua University of Technology and nationally renowned MOOC expert, was invited to give a lecture on the construction of foreign language “double gold” courses. Dean Yi Lixin, Deputy Dean Deng Zhiyu, Department Chairs Tan Yu, Xing Xing, Li Chunneng, Hu Jiangbo, Liu Xin, and seven key teachers from teaching and research departments who are actively involved in the construction of the curriculum attended the lecture. Professor Liao Huaying is the head of the 2018 National Excellence Online Open Course, the first national online first-class course and the first national social practice first-class course.

After briefly introducing the current construction of the national “double gold courses” with the theme of “Construction and Declaration of Double Gold Courses in Foreign Languages”, she gave a systematic and full introduction of methods and considerations for building course resources in a three-dimensional way, including textbooks, online courses and practice platform. The English version of the course “Overview of Chinese Culture” has achieved all-round development in classroom practice, campus practice and contests & social practice. Professor Liao briefly explained the key points of the construction of the “double gold” courses, such as design objectives, concepts, team formation, platform selection and course optimization, and provided detailed suggestions on key issues of course construction, such as material selection, script design, slides making and filming methods. After that, Prof. Liao Huaying elaborated on the declaration of national first-class courses and the evaluation norms and requirements. She emphasized that the course should be multi-functional through “from point to surface”, “flipped classroom” and extended practical activities and combination of teaching and research, etc. That is how we can create a diversified “gold course” through online and offline channels.

The two-hour lecture was informative. The participating teachers enthusiastically asked questions and exchanged their confusion with Prof. Liao about the construction of the gold courses. And Prof. Liao answered the questions with patience. The lecture was very meaningful and has deepened the teachers’ understanding of course construction. As Professor Liao said, “The road is long and obstructed, but those who walk will arrive”, “Only when there is a country can there be a family, and only when there is life can there be an organization”. Each course is the basis of the work of faculty, and it needs them to build “with heart” in a long-term manner.
