Notes on how to read a Book

2020 Administrative Management Graduate Student   Zheng Ruofan

This book is a practical book. It puts forward four levels of reading: basic reading, inspection reading, analytical reading and theme reading. This kind of reading level is gradual. The first level is contained in the second level, and the second level is contained in the third level. Finally, it includes all levels and goes beyond all levels.

Basic Reading

Basic reading basically belongs to the level that can be achieved aftercompleting the fifth grade of elementary school, and this is the level where most people stay. The reason for this phenomenon is that no one has taught them how to read since primary school, and this book is to make up for this gap. At this level, people basically get rid of illiteracy and can read newspapers and fill in forms skillfully.

Inspection Reading

Inspection reading is divided into speed reading and rough reading.

Speed reading is to browse the title page of a book. If it is orderly, first look at the preface, study the contents, if there is an index, review it, if there is a publisher introduction, read it, and then find out what you want to know from thetable of contents, read it, and finally read the last three pages. Through speed reading, you will find out whether the book is worth your time.

If you feel that you can take a moment to read, you can continue to learn about the book through rough reading. Rough reading is also fast reading, but most people's reading is a kind of half voice reading, which greatly reduces the speed of reading. The author gives a good method, that is, finger reading. The method is to combine the thumb with the index finger and the middle finger, and use the pointer to move down the lines of words, faster than your eyes feel. Force your eyes to follow the movements of your hands. Once your eyes can move with your hands, you can read those words. Keep practicing and continue to Kwai up. Until you find out, you can be two or three times faster than before. Through rough reading, we can understand the contents of the book and prepare for analytical reading.

Analytical Reading

There are three stages in the analysis and reading.

In the first stage, you should ask several questions. First, what type of book are you reading? Second, whether you can describe the whole book in a sentence and list the outline of the book? Third, what problems the author wants to explain or solve?

The second stage is actually to list the outline. Find the author's keywords, find the author's main purpose, find out the author's discussion, find out the answers to the problems that the author has solved.

The third stage is how to evaluate a book objectively and fairly. After the above two stages, whether you agree with the author or not? First, you should say that you understand the author's point of view. There is no need to rush to prove whether the author’s point of view is right or wrong. Before making a comment, there must be sufficient evidence to prove that the author’s knowledge is insufficient or wrong, or that the author’s logic is wrong, or that the author’s analysis or reason is insufficient. If you can't provide enough evidence, you must agree with the author's point of view and don't want to comment.

Theme Reading

Theme reading is to read the book box in related fields with a specific topic. Theme reading is divided into two stages. The first stage is the preparation stage. In this stage, you should design an experimental book list with the topic you want to study, browse all the books on the list, and determine which are related to your topic. In fact, this method is very similar to searching literature. The second stage is to determine the most relevant chapters of the book, and then use your own language to interpret the relevant views of each author Next. List a series of questions, look at the answers of each author, analyze these answers, and put the common answers at the front, forming a neutral attitude.

What Ive learned

What resonates with me most is that the author points out that there are three purposes of reading: entertainment, improving comprehension and searching for information. And no matter what kind of reading purpose we have, we must have vitality to read, so that we can think and imagine in the process of reading. We should not only cultivate our reading skills for the purpose of reading, but also for the purpose of reading.
