The College of Biomedical Engineering was founded in 2009, formerly known as the Institute of Biomagnetism in early 1980s. The discipline of biomedical engineering has become a key discipline of the National Civil Affairs Commission after 30 years. It has cultivated a large number of undergraduates and postgraduates, 60% of whom are from ethnic minority areas, contributing greatly to the social and economic development of ethnic minority areas.
Through a long-term construction, it has organized a group of teaching staffs in conformity with the characteristics of biomedical engineering subject— “intersectionality and integrity”. There are 36 full-time teachers from 7 different first-level subjects, including 8 professors, 15 associate professors, 33 doctors, 1 young talent of the National Civil Affairs Commissions, 1 outstanding youth backbone in Hubei and 18 master supervisors. The college has five teaching and research offices (Fundamental of Biomedical Science, Electronic Technology, Medical Instrument, Biomedical Signal Processing and Comprehensive Laboratory) and one experimental teaching center.
At present, there are two undergraduate majors, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Information Engineering, and one first-level master’s program in biomedical engineering (including engineering and science), with about 900 undergraduates and more than 130 master’s students at college. The major of Biomedical Engineering is now a brand major and a “strategic emerging industry” training program major in the provincial level.
The college has a good scientific research and talent training platform. It is built with a Hubei Key Laboratory of Medical Information Analysis and Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment, the National Key Laboratory of Cognitive Science, and Hubei Biomedical Engineering Virtual Simulation Experiment Center and several professional laboratories, such as medical sensor, biomedical signal detection, medical instruments, virtual instruments, innovative student design. It also established Shenzhen Lanwang Technology Co., Ltd., Hubei Tumor Hospital and other talent training bases, as well as Shenzhen Anke High-Tech Co., Ltd., Wuhan General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command and other practice bases, purchasing a batch of international advanced equipment, such as 128 brain functional imaging systems, laser confocal microscopes and double channel patch clamp system for scientific research and talent training.
The college has a good research foundation. From microscopic to macroscopic, and from molecular, cellular to whole, it explores the basic rules of nervous system activities with neural engineering as the core. It has formed a number of its own characteristics’ researches, such as ion channel function and neurotransmitter release, EEG and EMG information detection and analysis, medical imaging and medical image processing, neural computing and application, biomedical sensing and medical instruments and other aspects. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 30 programs, including major research projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, general programs, youth projects and provincial and ministerial projects, published more than 70 academic papers of important academic papers in SCI and EI at home and aboard, obtained more than 30 patents and software copyrights, and been awarded in provincial and ministerial level 3 times. There are an amount of students who won the national and provincial awards such as “National Undergraduate Electronic Contest”, “National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest for Modeling” and “National Undergraduate Biomedical Electronic Innovation Design Contest, with more than 30 awards and 100 recipients; more than 10 national and provincial innovative scientific research projects have been gained.
Adhering to the college philosophy of “Student First, Foundation Oriented, Value Quality and Pursue Innovation”, the college aims to increase the student’s innovation ability and self-quality. By perfecting the curriculum system, innovating the teaching contents and strengthening the engineering practice, it fully arises study enthusiasm, initiative and creativity of students on the focus of academic style of college and school. In recent five years, the rate and quality of employment of graduate and postgraduate are steadily in the front of school.
