Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary subject which was developed by synthesizing the theories and methods of Engineering, biology and medicine. From the perspective of engineering, it applies the principles and methods of modern natural science and engineering technology to study organisms, especially the structure and function of the human body, physiological and psychological states and other life phenomena, at the levels of molecules, cells, tissues, organs and systems. Its theory and knowledge base are cross mixes information science, electronic science, material science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, molecular and cell biology, medicine, neuroscience, etc. It is mainly to develop and apply engineering techniques to study and intervene in the state change of human body system, in order to promote the development of bio-medicine and protect human health.

South-central University For Nationalities was granted the right to confer master’s degree in biomedical engineering in 1998, and began to enroll students in 1999. In 2001, this discipline was designated as a key discipline by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. With the strong support and the key construction of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the teaching staff, laboratory construction and scientific research have been rapidly developed after more than ten years efforts. Now, the academic team is of ration in education background, age structure and solid cooperation.  There are 6 professors, 15 associate professors and 13 lecturers in the academic team; 16 academic master supervisors and 3 engineering master supervisors; among them, one from Chutian was elected to the National Youth Talents Program and Hubei Outstanding Youth Backbone Program, and one was elected to the “3551” Optical Valley Entrepreneurship Talent Program in Hubei. There are 31 teachers with doctoral degree and 1 doctoral candidate.

The discipline of biomedical engineering in Central-south University for Nationalities now has set academic (including engineering and science) and engineering master degree programs.

Academic (engineering) master program enrollment direction: 01 Biomedical Signal Detection and Sensing; 02 Biomedical Signal Processing and Instrumentation; 03 Medical Imaging and Image Processing; 04 Cognitive Calculation; 05 Modeling and Control of Biological Systems. Academic (science) master degree enrollment direction: 01 Membrane Ion Channel and Related Drug Research; 02 Study on Abnormal Diseases of Electrical Activity; 05 Bio-electricity Science and Instrument Equipment Research. The length of schooling of full-time postgraduate is 3 years. It's object is built to cultivate high-level compound talents with good political quality and moral cultivation, as well as rigorous and realistic scientific attitude and style, who are proficient in theoretical knowledge of biomedical engineering-related fields, and is able to independently use natural science and modern engineering techniques to carry out researches in biomedical engineering-related fields, and is competent in medical information processing and medical device development so as to adapt to the construction of an innovative country and the social development needs of ethnic minority areas.

Master of Engineering enrollment direction: Enrollment direction: 01 Biomedical Signal Detection and Processing; 02 Medical Imaging and Image Processing; 05 Biomedical Sensing and Instrumentation. This study program adopts full-time study with length of schooling of 3 years. The target of the study program is to cultivate the senior engineering and technical personnel for the biomedical engineering industry, who has a good professional ethics, grasps the basic theory, advanced technical methods and modern technical means in biomedical engineering field, understands the technical status and development trend of biomedical engineering field, has the ability to independently undertake the development, exploit and engineering management of new technologies, new processes and new products in this field as well as innovative thinking; mainly engages  in medical information detection and analysis, medical equipment development and maintenance, to serve in medical and health services and promote social and economic development.
