Public Art Design is a newly developed specialty in China. It aims to bring up talents specialized in artistic design for open public space and urban environmental design. Inheriting the historic and humanistic tradition of ethnic minority areas, and following the teaching guideline of “inheriting and developing ethnic art”, we encourage students to conduct public art design with ethnic artistic concepts and ethnic materials. Students’ innovative capacities and practical skills are high emphasized. With training in artistic modeling, students would master basic theories, design and construction skills in space modeling for public landscape, public construction and public gardening, etc.
The specialty boasts of a high-quality teaching faculty with much experience in teaching. Students have been awarded many prizes at national or provincial exhibitions. The teaching facilities are complete and sufficient. Presently we have four teaching labs, namely Chu-style Lacquer Lab, Ceramics Lab, Sculpture Lab and Fiber Lab. In 2012, the Sixth National Lacquer Painting Advanced Workshop, hosted by Lacquer Painting Commission of China Artists Association, was held in the Chu-style Lacquer Lab. Presently, the courses offered to undergraduate students include the following: Decorative Art, Folk Sculpture, Materials and Technology of Mural, Public Art Design, Exhibition Space Design, Public Utilities Design, Public Landscape Design, Environmental Sculpture, Lacquer, Ceramics and Fiber Art, etc. Upon graduation, students may find employment in municipal designing bureau, transportation departments, construction and planning departments, universities and enterprises to work for design, research, teaching and administration.
