Introduction of the school of Arts and Communications

    The School of Arts and Communications was one of the first departments to be founded in the South -Central University for Nationalities. The history of the college can be traced to the language & culture class of the South-Central branch of the Minzu University of China, which was founded in 1952.  

 The famous phonologist and philologist, Yan Xuequn, was one of the founders of the college. Later on, many other great scholars worked here, both teaching and contributing research. Some of the well-known scholars include: Chen Kejiong -Scholar of Ancient Chinese, He Tianzhen - Scholar of Ethnic Minority Languages, Xie Zhimin- Scholar of Nushu and Li Hongran - Scholar of Ethnic Minority Literature.

There is a competent staff of 86 members in the College of Literature, Journalism and communication—3 professors of second grade,  7 professors of third grade,  13 professors of 4th grade and 28 associate professors, including 2 tutors of doctoral candidates, 38 tutors of master student. 1 UNESCO “excellent folk artist”, 2 specialists enjoying Award by the Chinese National Government , 1 Best Teacher of Hubei province, 2 Best Teacher of SCUN, 34 doctors and 6 teachers finished post-doctoral research. 

The college provides 5 Bachelor’s Degree programs: Chinese Language and Literature; Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language; Journalism, Broadcasting& TV and Advertising. The college also provide 1 1st rank discipline M.A. degree program : Chinese Language and Literature (covering 8 specialties for graduate students: Theory of Literature and Arts, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Philology and Classical Philology, Chinese Classics, Contemporary Chinese Literature, Linguistics and Literature of Chinese Minorities, Comparative Literature and World Literature. The college also provides 2 2nd rank discipline M.A. degree programs: Theory of Folklore and Communication.  

The program of Chinese language and literature is honored as National-class Characteristic program and Provincial Excellent Brand. Aesthetic Culture research centre of South-central Minority Ethnic Groups of China is the key research center of Hubei Humanity and Social science research.Journalism and Communication experimental teaching center is the key experimental center among Hubei Universities and colleges. The research teams of Linguistics, Endangered Languages  and Ethnic groups’ culture communication are honored by SCUN. 

The research project directed by Professor Pengxiuyin: Literature classification and study of oversea Chinese art theorists kept in Japanese librarty is the General Program of National Social Science Foundation of China. The research project directed by Professor Zhaohui: Genealogical study of Chinese Literature is the key research project of Ministry of Education. Besides, the college also undertake 15 national social science fund projects and 21 provincial and ministerial research projects. In recent years, the faculties published a range of influential academic works in People’s Publishing House and Chinese Sociology Publishing house. The faculties also published a range of influential essays in Chinese Social Science Quarterly, Literary Review, Literature and Art Studies and Literary Heritage. 

There are 11 research achievement which won the Provincial and Ministerial Prize. The college established cooperation with University of Wisconsin in the USA,Kyung Hee University and Chonbuk National University in Korea, and Shih Hsih University in Taiwan of China. A group of faculty members are invited to teach or do research in the University in the USA, Russia, Japan, Korea, South Africa and Pakistan.

College has a library with more than 3 volumes of books; a Virtual Studio Lab, a Broadcast Lab, a Newspaper Row Editing Lab, a Non-linear Editing Lab, an Advertising Photography Lab, equipped with 40 sets of Non-linear Editing System, 30 sets of Founder Editor System. It signed talent training agreement with Hubei Daily Media Group, Xinhua News Agency Hubei branch and other units in order to establish 21 Internship Bases for College Students. In 2009, College was named the Advanced Civilized Unit by State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and it was rated as the Advanced Unit of Employment by SCUN for consecutive 7 years.
